Assessment Week (Updated!)

Students will have a unit assessment the week of December 11. Students will be tested individually for the reading  portion. Students will need to know how to read and spell the red words they have brought home. The red word spelling test will be given on Wednesday, December 13. The following red words will be assessed for spelling:

1st Grade: after, read, was, our, some, why, animal, make, she, now, one, eat, and take

2nd Grade: was, really, right, they, because, pretty, pictures, before, eye, car, air, told, few, high, people, would, why, might, kept, and dark

Upper levels: shall, knock, altogether, thought, their, world, even, father, already, page, buy, sister, against, show, don't, bye, by, love, walk, bought, answer, enough, and were

Upper level RTI will learn words with the ph spelling (phone,elephant, graph, etc.). There will not be any new red words this week due to testing!

2nd Grade-words with qu (quiz, quit, quite, etc.), red words because, they, right, really, and was

Upper levels-multisyllabic words with long vowels made by magic e (concrete, combine, reptile, trombone, etc.), red words enough, answer, bought, walk, were

Week of November 27

Upper levels: words ending in -ed and the three ways to pronounce it (/d/, /t/ /ed/, red words altogether, shall, thought, knock, and love

Week of October 30

Assessments are done, and we are back to a normal routine this week. The following skills will be taught:

1st Grade-We will work on the short e sound (pen, hen, met). Red words will be why, some, make, and animal.

2nd Grade-We will focus on v. Red words will be air, car, told, pretty, and pictures.

Upper grades-We will finish our ending blends lesson (-nd, -sk, -sp, -mp, and -nch). Red words are by, buy, bye (these three need to be reviewed for one more week), show, and sister.

Week of October 23

Students will work on the following next week:

First Grade: Students will be given individual progress assessments. There will not be a new skill taught. There will be a red word test on all of the words learned so far. Students need to know how to read and spell them. We will have the test on Monday, October 23.

Second Grade: Students will be given individual progress assessments. There will not be a new skill taught. 

Upper level RtI groups: There  is a red word test on Monday, October 23, on all of the words students have learned so far. Students should know how to read and spell the words. We will learn how to read words with ending blends next week (ct, ft, lt, nt, xt, pt, st, lp, lk, lf, ld). Red words for this week are page, don't, bye, by, buy, and against.

Week of October 16

Here are important dates and happenings in the RTI classes for next week:

1st Grade will work on the letter F and its sound. The red words for October 16-20 are many, good, and friend. Keep practicing all the red words that are sent home. Students will need to be able to spell and read all the red words that have been given to them up to this point for their test that will be on Monday, October 23.


2nd Grade will work on the letter y and its sound. There will not be any new red words this week for second grade since they are taking a unit test in Language Arts. Students should still be studying their red words, and they will have to be able to spell and read them for their test that will be given next week. The spelling test for the red words will be on Wednesday, October 18, and the reading portion will be given on Thursday, October 19.

My two upper level groups will work on s and w blends (sc, sk, sm, sp, squ, dw, sw, tw) and breaking words into syllables. New red words for October 16-20 are around, rough, each, door, sure, and these. Students will have a spelling and reading test on these words on October 23.

Week of October 10

Since we have a short week next week, students will bring home their red words Friday, October 6. I will be out of the building on October 13; therefore, we will have our weekly test on Thursday, October 12. This is only for this week. Weekly tests will go back to being on Fridays beginning the week of October 16.

Students will work on the following skills next week:

1st Grade: words with the /r/ sound, sight words here,all, and does

2nd Grade: words with wh (white, where, why, when, whale), site words through, only,hear, were, and learn

Upper level Orton-Gillingham groups: breaking words into syllables then spelling each syllable, beginning l blends (sl, pl, gl, cl, bl), sight words will be a review of tough, caught, though, and watch

We will always work on reading comprehension and fluency each week.

Week of June 12

June 12-15 are all 1:00 dismissals.

Field Day is Tuesday. Please remember to send sunscreen and a towel with your child. Bathing suits should be worn under clothing for the Wet Down. We will not have time to change before we go out. Students do not need to pack a lunch this day. We will have our annual Luau Lunch.

It's been a pleasure teaching your child over the past nine and a half months. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful summer!

Week of May 30

We have completed our last unit in our Language Arts program. Spelling books can stay home and are your child's to keep.

We will have our unit six language arts benchmark tests on Tuesday and Thursday. We will have our unit six word wall test on Wednesday, May 31. Book reports are due June 1!

Duck Race is on Friday, June 2.

***We will go to the Book Fair on Thursday, May 18. Our time frame is 10:05-10:35. Hope to see you there!
***Spring Concert is Wednesday, May 17. Arrival time is 5:30, show begins at 6. Spelling sentences are still due on Thursday. It may be helpful if your child begins writing them on Monday and writes a few each day.

Keep working on book reports! They are due Thursday, June1.

Language Arts-writing an informational text, comparing/contrasting two versions of a story (Stone Soup), using possessive pronouns

***Students will need two adult sized shoe boxes in the coming months. One will be needed for their book report projects in April, and the second will be needed in May for our shell project for MARE.

Week of February 13

**We will have school on Friday, February 17. It is a 1:00 dismissal. 

Students will be allowed to pass out Valentines on February 14. We are not having a class party, but if you'd like your child to pass out Valentines, he or she is welcome to bring them on Tuesday.

In Language Arts we will work on sequencing events in a story, antonyms, spelling long i words, and writing narratives.

In Math we will continue with money and begin telling time.

We will learn about sound in Science.

Week of February 6

We will work on the following skills next week:

Language Arts-doubling the final consonant of a word when adding -ed and -ing, pronouns, homonyms (words that are spelled the same but sound different and have different meanings), retelling the plot of a story, writing stories

Math-counting money

Science-motion (push vs. pull)

****Please have your child practice skip counting by fives and tens. This is an important skill to have when counting money. Students should especially practice starting at a number such as 25 and then adding tens and fives.

***If you have not sent back your child's signed report card envelope, please do so Monday.

Week of January 30

***Book reports are due on Wednesday, February 1! If your child would like to receive the 10 bonus points for dressing up as the famous person they researched, he or she should come dressed on Wednesday.

We will not have spelling homework or a test next week. We will be taking our Unit 3 Benchmark tests on Monday and Tuesday, Word Wall test on Wednesday, and writing assessment on Thursday. Please study the persuasive paragraph paper that was sent home last week with your child. They need to have all of the parts of a persuasive paragraph to receive full credit. We have also been discussing transition words and strong openings to grab the reader's attention. These should also be included in your child's writing.

We will continue to count money in Math. We are spending two days on each lesson in Math since this is the first time the students are learning about money. There will be days that they have the same numbered lesson sheet for homework, though the assignment will be different.

We will begin learning about the different states of matter in Science.

Week of January 23

We will have our math test on chapter six on Tuesday, January 24. Continue to practice subtraction with borrowing. On Wednesday, we will begin learning the different coins and how to count them. Chapter seven will also focus on telling time to the hour, half-hour, and five-minute interval. Please practice all of these skills at home as well.

In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about the history of the United States. Our unit test will be on Thursday, January 26. Continue to look over the study guide that was sent home.

We will focus on cause and effect, abbreviations, spelling compound words, and root words in Language Arts. We will continue to learn how to write a persuasive essay. This type of writing will be on the unit test that we will have next week. Please look over the persuasive writing review that will be sent home today. The students need to include every part of the writing to receive the full points.
